The Numbers Don't Lie. Our Girls Need This.
Girls' confidence has dropped from 68% to 55% in recent years, and it starts younger than most parents realize. Between ages 8 and 14, girls' confidence levels drop by 30%. By the time she reaches high school, the world has already started telling her she is too much, or not enough.
For Black girls, hair sits at the very heart of that story. 53% of Black mothers report their daughters experienced hair discrimination as early as age 5. That scrutiny does not stay outside the schoolyard. It follows them into classrooms, onto playgrounds, and into the mirror at home.
Here is what is powerful though. 90% of Black girls already believe their hair is beautiful. That love is already inside them. But research shows that hair-based discrimination and everyday microaggressions chip away at that confidence, with many girls facing bullying and criticism over their hair starting in early childhood, long before they are old enough to defend what makes them unique and extraordinary.
When a little girl is taught to embrace her natural hair early, that lesson does not stop at childhood. It grows with her. It walks into every room she enters as a woman. It shapes how she carries herself in her career, her relationships, and her sense of worth. A girl who loves her hair becomes a woman who loves herself, and that is one of the greatest gifts we can give her.
That is exactly why My Hair exists.
